They are a pretty distinctive tool made from splitting a cobble, often made of quartzite to create a cutting or chopping tool. These tools are pretty common around the Williston reservoir, probably because the river cobbles that are often made from, are pretty easy to come by, so it is simpler to make a new one rather than carrying an old one over a long distance. They almost always have one rounded face made from the original outside (cortex) of the cobble and one flatter, rougher broken face. Often you can see the impact location on the edge where the spall was hit off the cobble. Oftentimes the sharp edges will be worn down and chipped from use and sometimes intentionally flaked to re-sharpen them. This is an exciting find for our crew!
